Investigation into the Effect of Flame Propagation in the Gasoline Compression Ignition by Coupling G-Equation and Reduced Chemical Kinetics Combustion Model

Gasoline Compression Ignition has been widely studied in recent years. The in-cylinder stratified charge in gasoline Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (PPCI) can extend the high load range with lower pressure rise rate than Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). However, it is still not clear that whether there is flame propagation in the gasoline compression igntion mode and how the flame propagation influences the combustion process and pollution formation. In order to investigate the effect of flame, several gasoline compression ignition cases, including the single-stage and two-stage heat release processes, are simulated with the KIVA-3V Release 2 code in this study. The G-equation is employed to account for flame propagation, and the reduced i-octane/n-heptane mechanism is used to handle the chemical reactions. The results show that the flame propagation exists in the combustion process and it can accelerate the heat release slightly.

Injection Strategy Study of Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Naphtha

This study investigates the performance of a diesel engine fueled with naphtha under different load by varying injection parameters and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate. The experiments were conducted on a 1.9-liter common rail diesel engine with a compression ratio of 17.5. Naphtha with a research octane number of 60.5 was tested. Three multi-injection strategies were designed. Each injection strategy, aided with EGR, conducts a characteristic combustion mode. Multi-injection strategies and single-injection strategy were tested and compared at one operating point under different main injection timing and EGR conditions. Results indicate that the well-designed multi-injection strategy has advantages over the single injection strategy in lowering noise, emissions and improving combustion efficiency. Among the three strategies, the strategy with 15-degree pilot timing and 2mg/cycle pilot injection could achieve both low NOx and PM emissions without sacrificing much fuel efficiency.

A Novel Three Steps Composited Parameter Matching Method of an Electromagnetic Regenerative Suspension System

The electromagnetic regenerative suspension has attracted much attention recently due to its potential to improve ride comfort and handling stability, at the same time recover kinetic energy which is typically dissipated in traditional shock absorbers. The key components of a ball-screw regenerative suspension system are a motor, a ball screw and a nut. For this kind of regenerative suspension, its damping character is determined by the motor's torque-speed capacity, which is different from the damping character of the traditional shock absorber. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a systematic approach for the parameter matching of ball-screw regenerative suspension, so that the damping character provided by it can ensure ride comfort and handling stability. In this paper, a 2-DOF quarter vehicle simulation model with regenerative suspension is constructed. The effects of the inertia force on ride comfort and handling stability are analyzed.

Detection of Driver’s Cognitive States Based on LightGBM with Multi-Source Fused Data

According to the statistics of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver’s cognitive distraction, which is usually caused by drivers using mobile phones, has become one of the main causes of traffic accidents. To solve this problem and guarantee the safety of man-vehicle-road system, the most critical work is to improve the accuracy of driver’s cognitive state detection. In this paper, a novel driver’s cognitive state detecting method based on LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine) is proposed. Firstly, cognitive distraction experiments of making calls are carried out on a driving simulator to collect vehicle states, eye tracking and EEG (electron encephalogram) data simultaneously and feature extraction is conducted. Then a classifier considering road and individual characteristics used for detecting cognitive states is trained based on LightGBM algorithm, with 3 predefined cognitive states including concentration, ordinary distraction and extreme distraction.

Smart Cockpit Development Trend and Smartphone-Head Unit Relationship

Smart vehicles have become an important development direction of the transformation and upgrading of the automotive industry. Highly intelligent smart vehicles can free human drivers from driving tasks, endowing cars with the mobility and instrument properties. Smart cockpits integrate the media for interactions between humans and environments inside and outside cars. This paper has explored the components of smart cockpits, sorted out three development stages of smart cockpits from such three dimensions as man, car and environment, analyzed the characteristics of the second development stage (Stage 2.0), and illustrated the necessity of the competition between smartphones and head units at the second stage. Based on the comparison of merits and demerits between smartphones and head units, this paper has proposed three principles for an ideal division of duties of smartphones and head units.

Multi-Objective Adaptive Cruise Control via Deep Reinforcement Learning

This work presents a multi-objective adaptive cruise control (ACC) system via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). During the control period, it quantitatively considers three indexes: tracking accuracy, riding comfort, and fuel economy. The system balances contradictions between different indexes to achieve the best overall control results. First, a hierarchical control architecture is utilized, where the upper level controller is synthesized under DRL framework to give out the vehicle desired acceleration. The lower level controller executes the command and compensates vehicle dynamics. Then, four state variables that can comprehensively determine the car-following states are selected for better convergence. Multi-objective reward function is quantitatively designed referring to the evaluation indexes, in which safety constraints are considered by adding violation penalty. Thereafter, the training environment which excludes the disturbance of preceding car acceleration is built.

Impact of Particle Characteristics and Engine Conditions on Deposit-Induced Pre-Ignition and Superknock in Turbocharged Gasoline Engines

Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), also referred to as superknock or mega-knock is an undesirable turbocharged engine combustion phenomenon limiting fuel economy, drivability, emissions and durability performance. Numerous researchers have previously reported that the frequency of Superknock is sensitive to engine oil and fuel composition as well as engine conditions in controlled laboratory and engine-based studies. Recent studies by Toyota and Tsinghua University have demonstrated that controlled induction of particles into the combustion chamber can induce pre-ignition and superknock. Afton and Tsinghua recently developed a multi-physics approach which was able to realistically model all of the elementary processes known to be involved in deposit induced pre-ignition. The approach was able to successfully simulate deposit induced pre-ignition at conditions where the phenomenon has been experimentally observed.

Integrated Decision-Making and Planning Method for Autonomous Vehicles Based on an Improved Driving Risk Field

The driving risk field model offers a feasible approach for assessing driving risks and planning safe trajectory in complex traffic scenarios. However, the conventional risk field fails to account for the vehicle size and acceleration, results in the same trajectories are generated when facing different vehicle types and unable to make safe decisions in emergency situations. Therefore, this paper firstly introduces the acceleration and vehicle size of surrounding vehicles for improving the driving risk model. Then, an integrated decision-making and planning model is proposed based on the combination of the novelty risk field and model predictive control (MPC), in which driving risk and vehicle dynamics constraints are taken into consideration. Finally, the multiple driving scenarios are designed and analyzed for validate the proposed model.

In-situ Mechanical Characterization of Compression Response of Anode Coating Materials through Inverse Approach

In this decade, the detailed multi-layer FE model is always applied for investigating the mechanical behavior of Li-ion batteries under mechanical abuse. However, establishing a detailed model of different types of batteries requires a series of material characterization of components. To improve the efficiency of the procedure of component calibration, we introduce a procedure of automatic coating material characterization as an example to represent the strategy. The proposed method is constructing a response solver through MATLAB to predict the mechanical behavior of the coating specimen's representative volume element (RVE) under designated test conditions. The coating material is represented through Drucker-Prager-Cap (DPC) model. All parameters, including boundary conditions and material parameters, are included in this solver.

The Impact of GDI Injector Deposits on Engine Combustion and Emission

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine technology is now widely used due to its high fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. However, particulate emissions pose one challenge to GDI technology, particularly in the presence of fuel injector deposits. In this paper, a 4-cylinder turbocharged GDI engine in the Chinese market was selected and operated at 2000rpm and 3bar BMEP condition for 55 hours to accumulate injector deposits. The engine spark timing, cylinder pressure, combustion duration, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), gaseous pollutants which include total hydro carbon (THC), NOx (NO and NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO), and particulate emissions were measured before and after the injector fouling test at eight different operating conditions. Test results indicated that mild injector fouling can result in an effect on engine combustion and emissions despite a small change in injector flow rate and pulse width.

The Impact of Injector Deposits on Spray and Particulate Emission of Advanced Gasoline Direct Injection Vehicle

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines have developed rapidly in recent years driven by fuel efficiency and consumption requirements, but face challenges such as injector deposits and particulate emissions compared to Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines. While the mechanisms of GDI injector deposits formation and that of particulate emissions have been respectively revealed well, the impact of GDI injector deposits and their relation to particulate emissions have not yet been understood very well through systematic approach to investigate vehicle emissions together with injector spray analysis. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on a GDI vehicle produced by a Chinese Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and an optical spray test bench to determine the impact of injector deposits on spray and particulate emissions.

Droplet Measurement of High-Pressure Liquid Ammonia Injection Using PDPA

Liquid ammonia is an ideal zero carbon fuel to reduce carbon emission of internal combustion engines. The high-pressure injection of liquid ammonia is a key technology to fast distribute fuels and prepare better combustion performances. The physical properties of liquid ammonia are different to traditional fossil fuels including diesel and gasoline, which can change the spray and droplet characteristics significantly. However, the spray droplet characteristics of liquid ammonia injection is lack of investigations. In this paper, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) are used to measure the droplet diameter and velocity of high-pressure liquid ammonia sprays up to 75 MPa and compare to diesel sprays. Effects of flash boiling of liquid ammonia droplet characteristics are also analyzed.

Biomechanical Response of the Bovine Pia-Arachnoid Complex to Normal Traction Loading at Varying Strain Rates

The pia-arachnoid complex (PAC) covering the brain plays an important role in the mechanical response of the brain due to impact or inertial loading. The mechanical properties of the bovine PAC under tensile loading have been characterized previously. However, the transverse properties of this structure, such as shear and normal traction which are equally important to understanding the skull/brain interaction under traumatic loading, have not been investigated. These material properties are essential information needed to adequately define the material model of the PAC in a finite element (FE) model of human brain. The purpose of this study was to determine, experimentally, the material properties of the PAC under normal traction loading. PAC specimens were obtained from freshly slaughtered bovine subjects from various locations.

Influence of Pre-impact Pedestrian Posture on Lower Extremity Kinematics in Vehicle Collisions

Lower extremities are the most frequently injured body regions in vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions and such injuries usually lead to long-term loss of health or permanent disability. However, influence of pre-impact posture on the resultant impact response has not been understood well. This study aims to investigate the effects of preimpact pedestrian posture on the loading and the kinematics of the lower extremity when struck laterally by vehicle. THUMS pedestrian model was modified to consider both standing and mid-stance walking postures. Impact simulations were conducted under three severities, including 25, 33 and 40 kph impact for both postures. Global kinematics of pedestrian was studied. Rotation of the knee joint about the three axes was calculated and pelvic translational and rotational motions were analyzed.

Study on Engine Start Vibration Index in a Hybrid Powertrain Using Torque Sensor and Cylinder Pressure Sensor

This paper presents an investigation of drivability issue of engine start-stop. Hybrid vehicles provide excellent benefits regarding fuel efficiency and emission. However, vibration results from constant engine start and stop events generate drivability issues, thus compromising driving comfort. This paper has designed a high speed torque sensor to capture instantaneous torque at the engine shaft. Its consequences help to find out the most suitable index of vibration severity. This paper is organized in four sections. The first section introduces the powertrain to be studied. The second section introduces development of a specially designed torque sensor. The torque sensor is installed between the engine and ISG (Integrated Starter Generator), alongside with an encoder. The torque sensor is utilized to collect the instantaneous shaft torque on occasion of engine start. In the third section, this paper has performed two experiments.

Structural Designs for Electric Vehicle Battery Pack against Ground Impact

Ground impact caused by road debris can result in very severe fire accident of Electric Vehicles (EV). In order to study the ground impact accidents, a Finite Element model of the battery pack structure is carefully set up according to the practical designs of EVs. Based on this model, the sequence of the deformation process is studied, and the contribution of each component is clarified. Subsequently, four designs, including three enhanced shield plates and one enhanced housing box, are investigated. Results show that the BRAS (Blast Resistant Adaptive Sandwich) shield plate is the most effective structure to decrease the deformation of the battery cells. Compared with the baseline case, which adopts a 6.35-mm-thick aluminum sheet as the shield plate, the BRAS can reduce the shortening of cells by more than 50%. Another type of sandwich structure, the NavTruss, can also improve the safety of battery pack, but not as effectively as the BRAS.

Research on the Anti-Shuffle Control for Hybrid Electric Vehicles in the Parallel Mode

In order to solve the problems of the shuffle caused by internal and external excitation and the difficulty in obtaining the real-time accurate engine torque during the parallel mode operation of hybrid electric vehicles, a dynamic coordination control strategy for suppressing the jitter of hybrid electric vehicles based on the closed-loop control of engine speed was proposed. The engine torque filtering control method based on the slope limit was adopted to limit the rate of change of the engine torque and reduce the impact caused by the sudden change of the engine torque; the engine speed closed-loop control method was used to take the motor speed which is easy to be measured accurately in real time as the feedback control variable, which solved the problem of the real-time accurate estimation of the engine torque online. In parallel mode, the motor torque accounts for a small proportion because the torque distribution method gives priority to the engine.

Research on Coordinated Control during Mode Transition in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Due to the objectives of achieving high fuel efficiency and drivability performance, a dual-drive hybrid system with two motors has been developed. Various drive modes are presented based on engine status, requested driver torque and power, as well as C0 status in different working conditions. The transition control of drive mode change poses a unique challenge for the dual-drive hybrid system. This study discusses the control strategies for transitioning between drive modes. The first type of transition mode is divided into four distinct phases. In the second mode transition, there are three phases: the synchronization phase involving P1 torque intervention, the C0 lock-up phase involving frozen P1 torque control and adjustment of C0 clutch torque and pressure correlation, and finally, the torque exchange phase. The third type of transition includes a dedicated torque transition phase followed by a C0 disengaged phase and concluding with a speed synchronization phase.
